Omega-3 is not a single nutrient. It is a family of fatty acids that includes ALA, EPA, and DHA. They come from different foods, play different roles, and are listed differently on supplement labels. Knowing those distinctions makes it much easier to compare a meal, a bottle of fish oil, and a plant-based product without relying on front-label marketing.
The three names to know
Alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA, is an essential fatty acid. Your body cannot make it, so it must come from food. Common sources include flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts, and oils such as flaxseed, soybean, and canola oil.
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are found mainly in fish and other seafood. Algal oil is a vegetarian supplement source of DHA and, in some products, EPA. The body can convert a small amount of ALA into EPA and then DHA, but the conversion is limited.
Start with food
A food-first approach brings more than omega-3s. Salmon, trout, sardines, and other seafood provide protein and additional nutrients. Walnuts and seeds provide fiber and other unsaturated fats.
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements lists fatty fish, flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts, plant oils, and some fortified foods as useful sources. Variety matters because the source determines which omega-3s you receive.

Then check the serving size. A label may require one, two, or more softgels to provide the advertised amount. Compare products using the amount per full serving, not per capsule, and make sure the number of servings matches the way you intend to use it.
Fish oil, krill oil, cod liver oil, and algal oil are not interchangeable
Fish oil and krill oil can provide EPA and DHA. Algal oil is a plant-based option that usually provides DHA and sometimes EPA. Cod liver oil may also contain vitamins A and D, which makes the total nutrient picture different and can matter when it is combined with a multivitamin or other supplements.
No form is automatically best for every person. Dietary preferences, dose, tolerance, medication use, pregnancy, and the rest of your diet all affect the choice.
What the evidence can—and cannot—say
Omega-3s are components of cell membranes and have functions throughout the body. Eating fish and seafood as part of a balanced dietary pattern is associated with heart-health benefits. EPA and DHA from food or supplements can lower triglycerides, but treatment of high triglycerides is a medical decision and may involve prescription doses.
That does not mean every person needs an omega-3 supplement or that a supplement prevents disease. Benefits vary by outcome, population, dose, and baseline diet. Treat broad cure-all claims as a warning sign.
Safety and medication conversations
Omega-3 supplements can interact with medications, and high doses may not be appropriate for everyone. Discuss them with a healthcare professional if you take anticoagulants or antiplatelet medicines, have a bleeding disorder, are preparing for surgery, are pregnant or nursing, or are using omega-3s to manage a diagnosed condition.
